Four more bodies recovered from Himlung Himal; death toll rises to 11

KATHMANDU: The death toll from an avalanche on Himlung Himal in Manang has risen to 11 after rescue workers recovered four more bodies on Thursday.

Rescue team leader Pasang Kaji Sherpa said four bodies were recovered from the avalanche-affected area on Thursday, the Nepal National Mountain Guides Association said in a social media post.

The identity of the deceased, however, has not been established.

Three bodies were recovered on Wednesday. The bodies recovered on Wednesday were identified as those of Ash Gurung, Suraj Rai and Kalam Budha.

Likewise, two bodies each had been recovered on Sunday and Monday. The bodies recovered on Monday were identified as those of Birendra Gurung and Ghanshyam Rai, while the bodies of Chhebi Bhote and Pasang Bhote were recovered on Sunday.

The search and rescue operation is continuing in the affected area. IFMGA mountain guides Pasang Kaji Sherpa and Bikram Karki are leading the operation with the support of five experienced climbing guides, according to the NNMGA.

The avalanche struck a group of 22 people comprising eight climbing guides and 14 kitchen staff on Sunday morning.

Himlung Himal (7,126 meters) is located in the Nar-Phu region of Manang district.
