KATHMANDU: Four climbers who died after an avalanche on Mount Himlung in Manang on Sunday have been identified.
According to the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA), its search team recovered the bodies of Birendra Gurung and Ghanashyam Rai on Monday. The bodies of Chhebi Bhote and Pasang Bhote were recovered on Sunday.
The avalanche in Himlung Himal hit 22 people — eight climbing guides and 14 kitchen staff. Twelve of them came into contact on Sunday, while two were confirmed dead and eight were reported missing. Of the eight missing people, rescue workers recovered two bodies on Monday.
The NNMGA, which has been coordinating the rescue operation, said in a social media post that the search and rescue operation was underway.
Himlung Himal (7,126 meters), located in the Nar-Phu region of Manang, is about a four-hour walk from Phu village. According to mountain guides, the peak serves as a preparatory expedition for climbers planning to climb higher-altitude peaks. They say the mountain has no high rocky walls and offers a relatively straightforward route to the summit.
