KATHMANDU: Severe flooding has struck the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa district, roughly a year after massive floods caused widespread destruction in the region near the Nepal-China border.
Local officials confirmed that the flood originated across the border in Tibet.
Citing dangerously high water levels, the District Administration Office, Rasuwa, has urged residents along the riverbanks in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan districts to evacuate to safer locations.
At 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) issued an urgent notice warning of an elevated risk of severe flooding in the Trishuli River.
The Bhotekoshi merges with the Ghattekhola River, which originates from the sacred Gosainkunda Lake just above Dhunche, to form the Trishuli River. The Trishuli is a major tributary of the Narayani River. It is known as the Gandak after entering India and is one of the major tributaries of the Ganges.
In July of last year, similar flooding in the Lhende River washed away a key bridge linking Nepal and China and destroyed multiple sections of the essential Dhunche–Rasuwagadhi highway. Satellite data analyzed by organizations like ICIMOD confirmed that a glacial lake on the Purugu Glacier north of Langtang Himal rapidly expanded and ruptured. This sent a violent torrent of water downstream into the Lhende River catchment areas.
