KATHMANDU: An all-party meeting called by the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) to resolve the House stalemate ended inconclusively on Monday.
RSP President Rabi Lamichhane had called the meeting to forge a consensus to resume parliamentary proceedings. Representatives from all parties represented in the National Assembly and the House of Representatives, except the Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP), attended the meeting.
However, the meeting ended conclusively.
The opposition parties have been maintaining that they will not allow House proceedings to resume unless the Prime Minister retracts his statement on the Nepal-India border issue and apologises in the House.
Responding to queries of lawmakers last week on the Nepal-India border issue, Prime Minister Balendra Shah last week said solutions would be sought through talks, as not only India, but also Nepal has encroached on Indian territory.
Amid continued opposition by lawmakers, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal on Tuesday postponed the House of Representatives meetings until Monday.
CPN-UML Chief Whip Ain Mahar said protests in parliament would continue until the Prime Minister addressed the House regarding the Nepal–India border issue. “The all-party meeting also discussed RSP President Lamichhane’s recent visit to India and ways to end the parliamentary deadlock,” Mahar said. “However, the RSP failed to present a clear position on either issue.”
The RSP, meanwhile, has maintained that the Prime Minister will not provide a response on the matter.
Even though the meeting ended inconclusively, leaders of RSP, Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and Maoist Center are still engaged in informal talks to end the stalemate.
