‘Laali Bazaar’ to hit screens Friday after court refuses interim order

KATHMANDU: The Patan High Court has denied an interim order against the release of the Nepali film ‘Laali Bazaar’.

Produced under the banner of Shatkon Pictures, the film portrays the struggle of a woman from the Badi community. Swastima Khadka essays the role of the main protagonist in the film.

A division bench of High Court Judges Khadananda Tiwari and Netra Prakash Acharya issued the order on Wednesday, hearing a writ petition filed by Roshani Nepali and others.

Nepali filed a petition at the high court on April 27, arguing that the film portrays the Badi community in a negative way.

On April 28, a bench of High Court Judge Prakash Dhungana issued a temporary order against the release of the film until May 5.

After the court’s order, Yam Thapa, director of the film, said the court’s order has paved the way for the film’s release. “Based on an emotional story of struggle, love and hope between a mother and daughter, the film is set to be released in cinemas across the country from this Friday,” Thapa wrote in a social media post.

“We never had, nor do we have, any intention of hurting any community or group.”
