Karan KC handed one-match ban over controversial comment

KATHMANDU: National team fast bowler Karan KC has been handed a one-match ban following a controversial comment related to umpires.

On Friday, KC had left a comment on a social media post amid ongoing debates over umpiring during the Prime Minister Cup Men’s National One-Day Tournament. In the post, KC, apparently in jest, asked: “What would the match ban be if a player by mistake beat an umpire? Just for query?”

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) took disciplinary action against KC, ruling that his comment was against the spirit of the game. He has also been fined 100% of his match fee.

KC had commented on a social media post about a discussion between Bagmati Province Captain Sandeep Lamichhane and the umpire who had rejected an appeal for LBW against Madhesh Province batter Mohammad Aadil Alam by Bagmati bowler Pratish GC.

KC’s comment drew widespread criticism, with many saying it undermined the professional safety and dignity of umpires. The Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association of Nepal also issued a statement demanding strict action against KC.

After the controversy escalated, Karan later apologized for the remark. He said the comment was intended as a joke and expressed regret if it had hurt anyone.
