‘Paran’ highest grossing Nepali film of 2082 BS

KATHMANDU: A total of 56 Nepali films were released in the year 2082 BS, which ends on April 13. A majority of them failed to recoup their investment.

Data released by the Nepal Film Development Board shows that only a few films achieved commercial success, while several failed to meet expectations despite early buzz.

Films such as Bhuthan, Narasimha Avatar, Magne Raja, Koshedhunga, Balidan, Haribahadurko Jutta, Man Binako Dhan, Abhimanyu: Chapter One, Jharipachhiko Indreni, Eklo, Viral Gorkhe, and Gobar Ganesh, all of which had generated significant attention at the time of announcement, underperformed at the box office.

Paran was the highest-grosser of the year, raking in Rs 177.68 million.

Top Five Grossers

Paran – Rs 177.68 million
Paran became the highest-grossing film of the year, collecting Rs 177.68 million. The film marked a successful directorial debut for Deepak Prasad Acharya, who started his career in television. Critics attribute the film’s strong box office performance to positive word-of-mouth.

The film stars Neer Shah, Madan Krishna Shrestha, Pooja Chand, Mahesh Tripathi, Anjana Baraili, Buddhi Tamang, Keki Adhikari, and Praveen Khatiwada, among others.

The film follows the relationship between a father and son, focusing on family separation and the emotional void created by migration abroad.

Only 19 of these films manage to collect more than Rs 10 million.

Aa Bata Aama – Rs 131.37 million
Directed by Chandra Pant, Aa Bata Aama ranked second, collecting Rs 131.36 million at the box office. Released on January 30, the film is still running in some theaters.

It features Pradeep Rawat, Bipana Thapa, Paul Shah, Usha Upreti, and Saigrace Pokharel. Following its success, the production team has already announced a sequel.

The film portrays how a family’s foundation often rests on the mother, and how her absence or struggles impact children’s lives.

Jerry on Top – Rs 122.88 million
Jerry on Top ranked third with a collection of Rs 122.88 million. It is the sequel to the popular film Jerry, although the storyline and characters are different.

Directed by Suyog Gurung, the film stars Anmol KC, Aanchal Sharma, Jassita Gurung, Kedar Ghimire, and Bhuwan KC. Set in the Everest region, the story blends romance, friendship, and the challenges of mountaineering.

Unko Sweater – Rs 114.19 million
Unko Sweater was the year’s fourth highest-grosser with a total collection of Rs 114.19 million. Directed by debutant Nabin Chauhan, the film stars Bipin Karki and Miruna Magar in lead roles. It presents a heartfelt love story between a Brahmin man and a Gurung woman, and explores how caste and social differences and family responsibilities shape the relationship.

Jaari 2 – Rs 62.41 million
Jaari 2 ranked fifth with a total collection of Rs 62.41 million. Directed by Upendra Subba, the film is a true sequel to the 2023 hit Jaari. It continues the story of love and marital life between characters played by Dayahang Rai and Miruna Magar. Set in the Limbu community of eastern Nepal, it highlights the traditional Jari practice, cultural identity, and the impact of the Maoist insurgency on religion and culture, with a focus on the traditional Chyabrung drum.
