Leaders press NC leadership to hold special convention by Jan 28

KATHMANDU: A group of Nepali Congress (NC) leaders advocating for a special general convention has warned that the 15th General Convention must be held within the deadline of January 12 stipulated by the party statute.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the group said it would accept a regular convention only if the term of the current Central Working Committee (CWC), led by party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, is not extended.

The mandate of the present CWC expires on December 14.

It said that a special convention is mandatory if the party fails to announce and conduct the regular convention within the statutory timeframe. “To build a strong, united and people-centred Nepali Congress, the special general convention must be completed by January 28 as required by the party statute,” the group said in the statement. “No excuse or an unreliable schedule of the regular convention can render the demand for a special convention inactive. The demand becomes void only if the regular convention is conducted within the term and new leadership is elected. Otherwise, no one can block or override the statutory right to a special convention.”

The group added that it has demanded the convention itself, not merely a timeline for it. It urged the leadership to adhere to the party statute. “All activities, initiatives and solutions must remain within the party’s constitutional framework,” it added.
