Gandaki ministers, employees decide to forgo allowances

POKHARA: Ministers and employees of Gandaki Province Government have decided to forgo allowances.

The decision comes after massive vandalism and arson on government properties during the Gen Z protest against corruption and lack of governance.

A meeting of the provincial cabinet held on Thursday decided to adopt austerity measures during this period of crisis. The meeting also decided to cancel training sessions, workshops and seminars.

According to provincial government spokesperson Dr Takaraj Gurung, the decision was taken because the country is facing a crisis. “The government will not conduct regular programs either. Training, workshops and seminars will only be held in Gandaki if absolutely necessary,” he added.

The cabinet also decided to begin collecting a complete record of the damage caused to provincial government buildings and vehicles.

Arson and vandalism on September 8 and 9 left the Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers, the provincial assembly building, several ministries and their subordinate offices in ruins.

The provincial government has decided to immediately begin repairs on buildings that can be restored. Likewise, the cabinet has decided not to assign staff on deputation or approve leave applications for the time being. The government has also demanded an investigation into damage caused to private and public property and called for those responsible to be brought under legal action.
