KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Thapa has criticized the government’s decision to block social media platforms.
Writing a post on his official Facebook page on Thursday, Thapa said the government had taken the wrong approach. “The Supreme Court has directed the government to establish legal mechanisms to evaluate, monitor and make social media content accountable while discouraging misuse,” he wrote. “Citing that verdict to shut down social media through directives is not the solution. Instead, the government should expedite the passage of the Social Media Bill currently under consideration in the National Assembly and create appropriate laws.”
Thapa warned that any restriction on social media would curtail freedom of expression and the right to information. He added that the issue is also tied to cyber risks and, therefore, requires a balanced and prudent approach.
“Social media has become an essential platform for citizens to exercise free expression, engage in public debate and hold the government accountable,” he said.
Thapa added that these platforms are also linked to social interaction, entrepreneurship, the digital economy and everyday life.
“I once again urge the government to reconsider its decision,” Thapa said. “Rather than imposing bans, it should focus on ensuring safety, preventing misuse and regulating social media by fast-tracking the necessary laws.”
