Oli returning home after attending SCO Summit in China

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is returning to Nepal on Wednesday after attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025 in Tianjin, China, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Oli left for China on August 30, leading a 23-member Nepali delegation. During the visit, he held a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping in Tianjin and addressed the SCO Plus Summit. On the sidelines of the event, Oli also held talks with several world leaders.

Nepal has been a dialogue partner of the SCO since 2016. Established in 2001, the SCO has grown into one of the largest regional organizations in the world. Its full members include China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus. Afghanistan and Mongolia hold observer status, while Nepal, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the Maldives, Myanmar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates are dialogue partners.

During his stay China, Oli also met with China’s Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing. In addition, he held bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Oli was accompanied by his spouse Radhika Shakya, Education Minister Raghuji Pant, Tourism Minister Badri Prasad Pandey, lawmakers Purna Bahadur Khadka and Chhabilal Bishwakarma, and his economic and development advisor Dr Yuba Raj Khatiwada as well as other senior government officials.
