KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has issued a stern warning to Meta, the parent company of platforms like Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram, to register with the government within seven days or face a shutdown in Nepal.
Speaking at an interaction organized by the National Information Commission in Kathmandu on Friday, Gurung said that Meta has ignored three prior requests to register. He also described Meta’s refusal to comply with Nepal’s laws as an ‘insulting attitude’.
“Any company operating in Nepal must adhere to the country’s regulations. How can a company do business in Nepal and refuse to follow the registration process as per the country’s laws?” he questioned. “Register within a week, or we will shut it down.”
He added that discussions have been held at the secretary level with Meta officials, urging them to designate a contact center.
Responding to the government’s instructions, social media platforms like TikTok and Viber have already registered with the ministry.
Minister Gurung also urged other social media platforms to complete their registration. “Registration is mandatory to regulate social media, ensure accountability, and make platforms responsible toward society,” he added.
