Zero Hour: Lawmakers criticize slow pace of infrastructure works

KATHMANDU: Members of the House of Representatives have demanded that the government complete physical infrastructure projects on time.

Speaking during the zero hour of the House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday, lawmakers drew the government’s attention to the difficulties faced by people due to delays in the construction of roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

CPN-UML lawmaker Bhagawati Chaudhary urged the government to complete roads and other infrastructure projects on time and said the government should make construction companies accountable for any delay. Another UML lawmaker Bhanu Bhakta Joshi also expressed concern about unsatisfactory progress in road construction projects. “The government has failed to implement projects as per their timelines,” he added.

Likewise, Man Bahadur Gurung of CPN-UML called for expediting road expansion works on Prithvi Highway sections in Pokhara Metropolitan City.

Another UML lawmaker Bijula Rayamajhi stressed the need for disaster-resilient infrastructure development.

Manish Jha of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) criticized the delay in the installation of floodlights at the TU International Cricket Grounds in Kathmandu. Similarly, Mahesh Basnet of UML urged the government to bring ride-sharing apps like inDrive under the tax framework.

Likewise, Madhav Sapkota of CPN (Maoist Center) expressed dissatisfaction with the government for not establishing legal provisions for the medicinal cannabis business despite including the program in the fiscal budget.

Mukta Kumari Yadav of the Nepali Congress demanded quality education and healthcare provisions from the government. Similarly, Menaka Kumari Pokharel of UML stressed the need to develop more organized industrial zones. Metmani Chaudhary of CPN (Unified Socialist) urged the government to take immediate corrective measures to prevent an impending economic crisis.

Raghuji Pant of UML urged the government to ensure Nepali students can study in a safe and secure environment at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University of Odisha, India.

Nepali Congress lawmaker Rama Koirala Poudel urged the government to advance the smart city project in Bhaktapur. She also said common people’s land has been held for a long time in the name of developing smart cities.

Ram Kumar Rai of CPN (Maoist Center) drew the government’s attention to the delay in the repair of the Mid-Hills Highway and bridges damaged by floods in Khotang district.

Lawmakers like Maina Karki, Rankumari Balampaki Magar, Ranendra Baraili, Ranju Kumari Jha, Rajendra Kumar KC, Ram Krishna Yadav, Ram Shankar Yadav, Rupa Sosi (Chaudhary), Laxmi Tiwari, Lal Prasad Sawa Limbu also drew the government’s attention toward various issues.
