ITAHARI: Independent candidate Yogendra Mandal has been elected to the House of Representatives from the Morang-5 constituency.
Mandal, who was hopeful of getting a ticket from CPN-UML, had contested as an independent candidate after the party decided to support Raj Kumar Yadav of Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP).
The rebel candidate defeated his closest contender Shiva Kumar Mandal of CPN (Maoist Center) – the common candidate for the five-party ruling coalition – by nearly 4,000 votes. While Yogendra received 21,820 votes, Shiva Kumar got 17,486 votes.
Yadav, the common candidate of the UML-JSP alliance, finished third with 17,390 votes.
