KATHMANDU: Nepal has formally begun exporting electricity to Bangladesh.
Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) formally started the export of 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh during a virtual meeting of energy ministers of Nepal, Bangladesh and India.
Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Deepak Khadka, India’s Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manoharalal Khattar and Bangladesh’s Adviser for the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources attended the virtual meeting.
Nepal, Bangladesh and India signed a trilateral agreement in Kathmandu on October 17 to facilitate power export. As per the agreement, Nepal will export electricity to Bangladesh from June 15 till November 15.
NEA is exporting power generated by Trishuli and Chilime hydropower projects to Bangladesh. NEA will export electricity through the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur cross-border transmission line. From there, electricity will be supplied to the India-Bangladesh border using the transmission infrastructure of NVVN (NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam) of India.
Bangladesh has announced its intention to import 9,000 MW from Nepal by 2040. It is also planning to build a reservoir-type project by forming a joint venture with NEA.
