UML instructs lawmakers to not leave Kathmandu until Sept 19

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML has instructed its Members of the House of Representatives not to leave Kathmandu until September 19.

Multiple UML lawmakers that Himal Press talked to said they received phone calls from the parliamentary party on Tuesday morning. “We have been told not to leave Kathmandu until September 19, but no reason was given,” a UML lawmaker told Himal Press. “There is speculation that something significant is about to happen.”

UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula confirmed that a circular had been issued to the party’s lawmakers. He, however, declined to provide further details.

Coalition partners NC and UML are reportedly preparing to remove Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar who is facing human trafficking allegations.

Deputy Speaker Rana Magar had written a letter to the US Embassy in Nepal requesting them to expedite visa interviews for five individuals to attend the 67th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. However, the five individuals were not granted permission to travel to the US. The letter, written in February 2023, was made public some time ago.

A meeting of the ruling coalition also discussed the matter on Monday evening.
