KATHMANDU: South Korea has unveiled plans to recruit more workers from Nepal in the coming days.
Speaking at a media briefing organized on the occasion of 50 years of the establishment of bilateral relations between the two countries, the Ambassador of South Korea to Nepal, Park Tae-young, said South Korea plans to source Nepali workers in the wildlife and forestry sector as well.
“Since the birthrate in South Korea is very low, there is a shortage of workers in many sectors. So the process of bringing workers from Nepal will further increase in the coming days,” Ambassador Park said.
Nepalis are currently working in sectors like production, agriculture and ship-building, among others, in South Korea.
South Korea sources around 100,000 workers from different countries annually. Nepal is the largest supplier of workers to South Korea.
More than 100,000 Nepalis have already worked in different sectors of South Korea since the two countries signed an agreement to implement Employment Permit (EPS) – a government-to-government mechanism – for recruitment of Nepali workers in South Korea. According to the Department of Foreign Employment, 43,963 Nepalis are currently working in South Korea.
Nepal and South Korea established diplomatic relations on May 15, 1974.
Ambassador Park also said that support being provided by South Korea in different sectors would be increased in the coming days. South Korea has been extending its support in sectors like health, education and agriculture.
