High court allows Lamichhane to appeal without prison stay

KATHMANDU: The Patan High Court has permitted former national cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane to appeal the decision of the Kathmandu District Court, which convicted him in a sexual assault case, without being held in prison.

The Kathmandu District Court on January 10 handed Lamichhane a fine of Rs 500,000 and a jail term of eight years.

Sandeep’s legal counsel filed an appeal petition at the high court on Thursday. Man Bahadur Karki, Registrar of the Patan High Court, ruled that Sandeep could appeal the case while remaining outside the jail as he has already provided a bail bond of Rs 2 million.

The District Government Attorney’s Office, Kathmandu, filed a chargesheet against Lamichhane at the Kathmandu District Court on October 31, 2022. Although the district court detained Lamichhane after a hearing on November 4, the Patan High Court on January 12, 2023, ordered his release on a bail bond of Rs 2 million.
