KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Vice Chairman and Former Speaker Subash Chandra Nembang was cremated with state honors on Thursday. His sons Mingso and Suhang lit the funeral pyre.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal offered his final tribute to the late Nembang by draping his body with the national flag. Similarly, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli draped his body with his party’s flag. Cabinet ministers, leaders of different political parties, and heads of government agencies, among others, reached the Aryaghat cremation ground on Pashupatinath Temple premises to pay their last respects to Nembang.
Nembang, who chaired two constituent assemblies, passed away at 1 am on Monday night. His colleagues in the UML and leaders of other political parties remember Nembang as a soft-spoken and dignified leader.
Born in Suntalabari, Ilam, on March 11, 1953, Nembang joined politics from his school days itself. He was elected chairman of the Free Student Union of Mahendra Ratna Multiple Campus, Ilam, as a candidate aligned with the CPN-ML. After CPN-ML merged with CPN-Marxist to form CPN-UML after the political change of 1990, Nembang was nominated as the chief of the legal department.
Nembang was elected to the National Assembly in 1991 and 1995. He was elected to the House of Representatives from Ilam in 1999. He was appointed Speaker of the reinstated parliament in 2007, before serving as the chairman of two constituent assemblies.
He contested the Presidential election against Ram Chandra Poudel of Nepali Congress in 2023 but was defeated. UML leaders say this was Nembang’s only defeat in his decorated political career.
