KATHMANDU: The meeting of the House of Representatives scheduled for Wednesday was postponed without even entering the daily business program due to obstructions by the main opposition CPN-UML.
Lawmakers of CPN-UML rose from their seats right after Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire began House proceedings on Wednesday. The Speaker then allowed UML lawmaker Surya Thapa to speak on behalf of the party. Thapa said the home minister’s statement on the 100 kg gold smuggling in parliament on Tuesday attempted to cover the case. He demanded the immediate formation of a high-level inquiry committee to probe the matter.
“It has already been 22 days since the incident occurred, but the government has been failing to bring the truth behind the incident,” he added.
Lawmakers of the ruling coalition rose from their seats in the sign of protest to Thapa’s statement.
After Thapa completed his speech, UML lawmakers surrounded the well and chanted slogans against the government.
Although Speaker Ghimire repeatedly asked the UML lawmakers to allow the House session to proceed, UML lawmakers continued sloganeering. Later Speaker Ghimire announced that all matters in the daily business program of the House had been removed and postponed the House session till Friday.
