KATHMANDU: CPN-UML has demanded the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, and an investigation into him on the 100 kg gold smuggling scam.

Speaking at the meeting of the National Assembly on Thursday, Devendra Dahal, the leader of the UML parliamentary party in the National Assembly, alleged that Minister Shrestha was also involved in the smuggling case. He also demanded the formation of a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the case. “National Assembly members should also be included in that committee,” he added.

“A consignment of 100 kg of gold passes through the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Customs Office by breaching the security system of the airport. I would have resigned the same day if I were the home minister acknowledging my failure to put in place needful security arrangements. But it didn’t happen,” Dahal said.

UML also obstructed the House of Representatives proceedings on Wednesday. Because of the obstruction, the Speaker has adjourned the lower house session till Monday.
