Home Minister Sudhan Gurung submits resignation

KATHMANDU: Minister for Home Affairs Sudhan Gurung has tendered his resignation.

In a statement posted on social media on Wednesday afternoon, Gurung said he was stepping down with immediate effect to facilitate an impartial investigation into allegations made against him

Gurung said he had taken the questions, comments, and growing public concern regarding his share investments seriously. “For me, ethics are greater than the post, and nothing is more powerful than public trust,” he wrote.

He has been accused of concealing share investments in two microinsurance companies, having strong ties with controversial businessperson Deepak Bhatta, in the property declaration form submitted to Prime Minister Shah.

Referring to the recent wave of youth-led protests demanding good governance and accountability, he said the movement had underscored the importance of transparency in public life and responsible leadership. He added that any questions raised against a government formed on the sacrifices of many must be answered with integrity.

“To ensure a fair investigation into the matters concerning me and to avoid any conflict of interest while holding office, I have decided to resign from the post of Home Minister with immediate effect,” Gurung said.

With Gurung’s resignation, Prime Minister Shah’s cabinet has lost two members in less than a month of government formation. Earlier, Shah dismissed Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security, Deepak Shah, after he was found abusing power to secure a seat on the Board of Directors of the Health Insurance Board for his wife.
