KATHMANDU: Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has stated that India’s neighboring countries have understood the mural displayed in India’s new parliament building and that there is no issue.
The mural has sparked controversy as it includes territories of Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. The matter is also being raised in the Nepali parliament, with the main opposition criticizing Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal for not raising the issue during his recent visit to India.
Speaking at a press conference on the occasion of the completion of nine years of the Narendra Modi government, Jaishankar said, “This shouldn’t be a political issue. Our friendly neighbors will understand that. I am informed that they have appreciated our explanation.”
Jaishankar also said it is clearly written that the mural is an artwork that depicts the spread of the prehistoric Ashokan empire.
When asked about Pakistan’s objection to the mural, Jaishankar responded, “Let’s not dwell on Pakistan. I don’t expect Pakistan to understand.”
According to news reports, Bangladesh has instructed its mission in New Delhi to seek clarification on the mural from the Indian foreign ministry. Bangladesh has already informed its citizens that it will seek clarification from India.
Unfortunately, our leaders were unable to raise the issue during Prime Minister Dahal’s recent visit to New Delhi.
