KATHMANDU: Garbage was not collected from the premises of Singha Durbar, the main administrative center of the country, on Sunday.
“We too have heard that garbage was not collected from Singhadurbar on Sunday. But we have no role in it. Ministry of Urban Development has awarded a contract to collect garbage from Sighadurbar premises to a private party,” Rabin Man Shrestha, chief of the Environment Department of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, said.
Citing a lack of cooperation by the government on waste management, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah announced on his social media on Sunday that garbage collection would not take place at Singhadurbar from Sunday.
Mitra Ghimire, a promoter of Paribartan Sewa Pvt Ltd – the company that has won the contract to pick up garbage from Singha Durbar premises – confirmed that the company didn’t pick up garbage on Sunday. Ghimire said that Mayor Shah had telephoned him instructing him not to collect the garbage from Singha Durbar premises.
“We had been collecting the garbage from Singha Durbar and disposing of it at the landfill site in Sisdole. However, we didn’t collect garbage from Singha Durbar premises on Sunday,” he added.
According to Ghimire, approximately five tons of garbage are produced in Singha Durbar every day.
