KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is nearing completion of installing high-mast lights at 62 intersections across the city.

Out of 70 intersections identified as needing such lighting, poles have been erected at 62 sites in the first phase, and installation work is now in its final stage, according to Ram Chandra Nepali, Chief of KMC’s Public Works Department.

The project, initially estimated to cost Rs 99.9 million, was awarded through a public procurement process for Rs 98.52 million. The metropolis signed an agreement with the contractor in January.

Although the deadline for completion is set for mid-January next year, the department expedited the project to complete installation ahead of the Tihar festival to enhance the festive atmosphere, Nepali said.

“Twenty-one out of 62 intersections will have a 12.5-meter-tall pole, each fitted with six lights,” Nepali said. “At the remaining 41 intersections, 16-meter poles are being installed. They will have eight lights each.”

Each light has a capacity of 1,000 watts.
