KATHMANDU: The ruling coalition will take a concrete decision on government formation on Sunday, coalition leaders say.
In the meeting of the coalition leaders held at the prime minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Saturday evening, they agreed to finalize everything on Sunday and stake a claim to government formation within the timeframe given by the President.
Minister for Information and Communications Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, who attended the meeting, said the coalition leaders agreed that there was no alternative to the existing coalition but failed to forge consensus on the name to lead the government.
“Who gets the opportunity to the government in the first stage does not hold much significance. The pressing thing at the moment is to take the country forward as per the people’s aspirations,” he added. “There is no dispute in the coalition regarding government formation. We will finalize the name tomorrow.”
Nepali Congress President and incumbent Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal have both claimed the position of prime minister. While they have agreed to lead the government turn by turn, both want to become the prime minister first.
According to Maoist sources, CPN-UML is willing to allow Dahal to become the prime minister if the Maoist Center joins forces with them by breaking away from the ruling coalition.
The seven-day deadline timeframe given by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari inviting political parties to form government expires on Sunday.
