Itahari teacher arrested for beating student over homework

ITAHARI: Police have arrested a school teacher in Itahari for assaulting a student who failed to complete his homework.

Purna Prasad Pokharel, a teacher at Shiksha Deep Boarding School in Itahari-16, mercilessly beat up 9th grader Anshal Budhathoki for not completing his homework, according to the boy’s family. The victim’s family said that the 14-year-old student was beaten with a pipe on various parts of his body.

According to the boy’s grandfather Rajan Budhathoki, Anshal had completed five out of six math assignments given by Pokharel. “When my grandson told the teacher he couldn’t complete the sixth question, the teacher thrashed him severely. The teacher also threatened my grandson not to tell anything to parents,” Rajan said. “We learned about the incident from other parents.”

The boy is currently receiving treatment at Birat Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar

Meanwhile, the Area Police Office, Itahari, arrested the teacher after the family filed a complaint against him. DSP Tek Bahadur Karki said bruises were visible on the boy’s body. “We are producing him before the Sunsari District Court for a police remand. We will then launch an investigation into the case,” DSP Karki added.

School principal Sahadev Kafle said the school has suspended teacher Pokharel with immediate effect. “A meeting of our board of directors suspended Pokharel on Thursday. We also learned about the incident late on Wednesday evening,” he added.

Kafle acknowledged that hitting a student cannot be jusified.
