KATHMANDU: Twenty National Assembly members, including Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsina, are completing their six-year terms on Sunday.

Eight of them were elected from CPN-UML. They include Chairman Timilsina, Deepa Gurung, Indu Kadariya, Dil Kumari Rawal Thapa, Kumari Dasaudi, Narapati Luwar, Bhairav Kumar Shrestha and Ram Chandra Rai.

Likewise, four of them – Ramesh Jung Rayamajhi, Anita Devkota, Jitendra Narayan Dev and Prakash Pantha – were elected from Nepali Congress; three – Bina Pokhrel, Hari Ram Chaudhary and Mahesh Kumar Mahara from CPN (Maoist Center); and two – Nanda Chapai and Singh Bahadur Bishwakarma – from CPN (Unified Socialist). Independent member Khim Lal Devkota and Pramila Kumar of Janata Samajbadi Party and Bimala Rai Poudyal, who was nominated by the President, are also completing their terms on Sunday.

Fifty-six members, eight from each of the seven provinces, were elected to the National Assembly after the 2017 election, while three were nominated by the President. These members were divided into pools of 20 members each and handed terms of two years, four years, and six years through a luck draw. Forty of these members have already completed their two-year and four-year terms. Twenty members, who were handed the six-year term, are completing their terms on Sunday.

The Election Commission held a vote on January 25 to fill 19 of these positions while one is to be nominated by the President on the recommendation of the council of ministers. The new members will be administered the oath of office and secrecy on Monday.
