KATHMANDU: The death toll in Yeti Airlines crash in Pokhara has reached 68.

Issuing a statement on Sunday, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) said 68 people died in the tragic accident. The identity of the deceased, however, has not been ascertained.

The ATR 72-500 aircraft left Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu at around 10:33 pm. It was scheduled to land at Pokhara International Airport after 25 minutes. But the aircraft crashed into the Seti River gorge. It last contacted the control tower at 10:50 am, according to CAAN.

This is the first accident of ATR aircraft in Nepal.

Altogether 72, including four crew members, were onboard.

Meanwhile, the government has ordered a probe into the accident and directed CAAN to conduct technical examinations of all aircraft flying on domestic routes. It has formed a five-member team under former secretary Nagendra Prasad Ghimire to investigate the accident.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within 45 days.
