We held positive discussions with Indian leaders on development diplomacy: Lamichhane

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane has said that he held positive discussions with Indian leaders regarding development diplomacy.

Lamichhane made these remarks while speaking to reporters at the Tribhuvan International Airport on Friday, after returning home from a five-day visit to India.

He said the existing issues between Nepal and India would be resolved in a phased manner. “Sensitive matters, such as the Nepal-India border dispute, would be addressed step-by-step through diplomatic channels. Diplomatic initiatives are paramount to resolving any issue. Problems cannot be solved merely by causing an uproar,” he said.

The RSP President further added that he held meetings with Indian leaders in a transparent manner and focused on connectivity, religious tourism, development and prosperity. “The visit has served to reset ties. We presented a clear blueprint during the discussions,” he added.

Lamichhane also shared that he put forward a prosperity agenda during his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He told the Indian leadership that if Nepal prospers, both nations can move forward together. “If mistakes were made in the past, we don’t need to keep carrying that burden,” he added. “We are ready to move forward on the path of prosperity and development diplomacy.”

Addressing Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s recent remarks on the Nepal-India border issue, he said the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs represents the government’s official position. “There is no need to seek further official clarification on the matter,” he added.

Lamichhane traveled to India on Monday at the invitation of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). During his trip, he held meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and the BJP’s National President Nitin Navin.
