Urban development ministry estimates Rs 2.88 billion for flood damage repairs

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Urban Development has estimated that approximately Rs 2.88 billion will be required to repair and reconstruct infrastructure damaged by floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall on September 27 and 28.

Speaking at a press meet organized on Wednesday, the ministry’s Spokesperson, Binu Bajracharya, said floods and landslides affected structures under the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction like health posts, roads, street lights, parks and playgrounds etc

“Under the Department of Local Infrastructure, 27 road sections and 28 suspension bridges were partially damaged, while 32 suspension bridges were destroyed completely,” Bajracharya stated. “The estimated cost to fully reconstruct and repair these structures is Rs 1.77 billion.”

Bajracharya also said that the High Powered Committee for Integrated Development of the Bagmati Civilization has estimated the cost of removing soil and debris accumulated in  Bagmati, Manohara, Dhobi Khola, Bishnumati, Nakkhu, Hanumante and Karmanasa rivers at Rs 128.1 million. “River embankments, walls, and other structures constructed by the committee have been damaged. The estimated cost to rebuild these structures is Rs 700 million,” she added.

According to Bajracharya, the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority reported damages in Changu Narayan, Madhyapur Thimi, and Suryabinayak municipalities, including collapsed walls, sunken roads, bridge damage, and destruction to infrastructure along the Dhobi Khola corridor. “The cost of repairing and reconstructing these structures has been estimated at Rs 114.6 million,” she added.
