SURKHET: CPN-UML’s Nanda Gurung has been elected as the Speaker of the Karnali Province Assembly.
In the election held on Sunday, Gurung received 24 of the 38 votes cast. Her opponent Khadga Bahadur Pokharel of the Nepali Congress received 14 votes.
Gurung received votes from province assembly members from the ruling coalition parties like CPN (Maoist Center) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), among others.
Gurung has been elected to the Karnali Province Assembly under the proportional representation (PR) system.
Two members of the Karnali Province Assembly – seniormost member Hikmat Bahadur Bista who chaired the session and independent assembly member Devendra Bahadur Shahi – didn’t vote.
