Two-thirds majority doesn’t make every govt decision right: Singh

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Amaresh Kumar Singh has said that a two-thirds majority does not make every government decision right.

“Not every government decision is right simply because it has a two-thirds majority. In a democracy, the rule of law, established procedures and national interests stand above the government,” Singh said in a social media post on Thursday.

His remarks came amid controversy over the government’s recommendations for ambassadorial appointments and the role of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee in scrutinising the nominees.

On Wednesday, the Parliamentary Hearing Committee rejected the nomination of Chudamani Kharel as Nepal’s ambassador to Malaysia. During the hearing, committee members raised various questions about Kharel, including allegations of financial dealings.

The committee also rejected the nomination of Giribahadur Sunar as ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Complaints filed against him alleged domestic violence, financial transactions and conduct contrary to diplomatic protocol. It has put the hearing of Jigyan Kumar Thapa, who was recommended as ambassador to Japan, on hold.

Thapa has been accused of holding permanent residency (PR) status in Japan.

Meanwhile, the committee unanimously endorsed the nominations of Dr Nishchal Nath Pandey as ambassador to India, Kalyan Raj Sharma to China, Chiran Jung Thapa to the United States, Gaurav Shamsher JB Rana to the United Kingdom and Saru Joshi to Germany.

It also approved the nominations of Suresh Kumar Karn as ambassador to Israel, Padmakshi Rana to Oman, Dr Sangam Shrestha to South Korea, Prapti Sherchan to Spain and Dr Manchala Jha to Sri Lanka.
