Two arrested in Surkhet for extorting money to ‘fix’ police case

SURKHET: Two individuals have been arrested in Birendranagar, Surkhet, on charges of extorting money by falsely promising to settle a legal case.

According to the District Police Office, Surkhet, Krishna Bahadur Tharu (43), originally from Geruwa Rural Municipality-3 of Bardiya and currently residing in Birendranagar-10, and Muna Chand (34) from Indrapur in Birendranagar-13, have been taken into custody.

The duo extorted Rs 50,000 from the family of an individual being held in police custody on charges of indecent behavior, police say. They allegedly promised to secure the release of the accused and resolve the case in exchange for money.

Police say the two have been charged with criminal extortion.
