TU publishes FSU election program

KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan University has published a program for the Free Students Union (FSU) election.

Pashupati Adhikari, director of the Student Welfare and Sports Directorate of TU, made public the election program amid an event in Kathmandu on Thursday.

TU Executive Council on January 6 decided to hold the FSU election on March 19. The FSU election was last held in 2018.

As per the program, candidacies for both first past the post (FPTP) and proportional representation (PR) voting have to be filed on March 11. Similarly, student unions have to be registered for the election on March 3, while colleges will publish the voters list on March 5. Similarly, complaints on the voters list can be filed until March 9. The final voters list will be published on March 10.

Candidates and unions can organize publicity campaigns till 5 pm on March 16.

TU has set the age limit for candidates at 28 years. Similarly, this is the first time that TU is adopting a mixed electoral system.

As per the election regulations published by the TU two weeks ago, the chairman, secretary, treasurer, and 50 percent of executive members have to be selected from FPTP voting and 50 of executive members from PR voting. Colleges having 200 students can form an 11-member FSU, while those having up to 1,000 students can have a 13-member FSU. Similarly, colleges having up to 3,000 students can form a 19-member committee, and colleges having more than 3,000 students can form a 21-member FSU.

The election will be held in 62 constituent and 1040 affiliated colleges across the country.
