KATHMANDU: International tourist arrivals to Nepal declined by 4.4% in May, data released on Monday by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) shows.

A total of 86,216 international tourists arrived in Nepal by air during the month, down from 90,211 in May last year. The decline is largely attributed to a significant drop in arrivals from India.

Arrivals from India fell by 26.5% to 28,160, compared to 38,288 in the same month last year. This figure excluded the number of Indian tourists entering the country via land routes.

Region-wise, tourist arrivals from South Asia and Africa decreased by 21.6% and 12.5%, respectively. In contrast, the Middle East posted a strong growth of 32.5%, followed by Oceania (18.7%), Europe (13.6%), and other parts of Asia (11%).

Despite the overall decline, India remained Nepal’s largest source market in May, contributing 28,160 visitors. The United States followed with 9,074 visitors—an increase of 10.5% from 8,527 in May last year. China ranked third with 8,824 arrivals, up 10%, followed by Bangladesh (4,280) and the UK (3,473).

Total international tourist arrivals in the first five months of 2025 reached 501,264, slightly down from 506,280 during the same period last year.
