Total telephone subscriptions in Nepal hit 30.31 million

KATHMANDU: The total telephone subscriptions in Nepal have reached 30.31 million.

According to the latest Management Information System (MIS) for the month of Jestha (mid-May to mid-June) released by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), GSM subscribers continue to dominate voice telephony services in the country. Nepal Telecom leads with 15.73 million GSM subscribers, followed closely by Ncell with 14.1 million users. In addition, Nepal Telecom has 30,564 fixed PSTN subscribers and 386,122 FTTH voice users.

Other service providers, including Constellation Pvt Ltd and 14 Technology, which operate portable satellite services based on GMPCS technology, have 1,173 and 16 users, respectively.

In terms of market share, Nepal Telecom commands 53.46% of the voice telephony market, while Ncell holds 46.53%.

According to the report, mobile service penetration stands at 102.52%. The data indicates multiple SIM usage among subscribers. In contrast, fixed telephone penetration remains significantly low at just 1.42%.

Meanwhile, broadband internet subscriptions have climbed to 31.13 million across the country. Of the total subscribers, 27.62 million, or 88.73% of the subscribers, rely on mobile broadband services. Fixed broadband (wired) accounts for 3.47 million users (11.17%), while there are 31,349 fixed wireless broadband users in the country.

Nepal Telecom leads the mobile broadband segment with a 55.41% market share. The only other mobile operator in the country, Ncell, holds 44.59% of the mobile broadband market.

Mobile broadband penetration has reached 94.7% of the population, while fixed broadband penetration stands at 52.11%.

Although the government has licensed more than 100 ISPs, six companies collectively control more than three-fourths of the fixed broadband market.

WorldLink dominates the segment with a 30.82% market share, followed by Nepal Telecom at 10.97% and DishHome at 10.58%. Vianet holds 10.54% of the market, while Classic Tech and Subisu account for 8.26% and 7.61%, respectively.
