Three parties agree to expedite formation of transitional justice commissions

KATHMANDU: The three major political parties have expressed commitment to appoint officials to two transitional justice commissions at the earliest.

Along with Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal, second-rung leaders like Minister for Home Affairs and NC leader Ramesh Lekhak and Maoist Center Deputy General Secretary Shakti Bahadur Basnet, and Attorney General Ramesh Badal, among others, were present in the meeting.

The meeting decided to form a committee to finalize office-bearers for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappearance Persons (CIEDP). The committee will be formed within a day or two, according to Basnet.

The President authenticated the Enforced Disappearances Enquiry, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act (Third Amendment) Bill, 2024, paving the way for the formation of the two commissions which are crucial to taking the peace process to a logical conclusion.
