KATHMANDU: Nepal won its first medal at the ongoing 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with karateka Tenzing Sherpa claiming bronze on Wednesday.
Sherpa defeated Vatthana Xayasan of Laos 9-1 in the bronze medal bout in the Men’s Kumite +84 kg category at Toyohashi Gymnasium.
Earlier in the day, Sherpa advanced to the semifinals after defeating his quarterfinal opponent, Leong On Tek of Macau, by Hansoku.
A karate match is won by Hansoku when a competitor is disqualified for a serious rule violation by their opponent.
Sherpa was trailing 0-1 when the bout was stopped.
He, however, lost 0-5 to Iran’s Mahmoud Nemati in the semifinal.
