DHANGADHI: Only three male candidates have been elected to the Sudurpashchim Province Assembly under the proportional representation (PR) system.
All three are from CPN-UML. Rajendra Singh Rawal and Dharma Pathak from Khas-Arya and Hira Sarki from the Dalit cluster have been elected to Sudurpashchim Province Assembly under the PR system from UML.
UML won seven seats out of 21 PR seats in the province assembly. The party sent four province assembly members from Khas-Arya and one each from Dalit, Tharu and backward region clusters.
Nepali Congress also won seven seats in the province assembly. Madhu Bharati, Saraswati Khadka, Juna Kumari Dani, Dammari Mahra ‘Raksha’ and Tulasa Devkota from Khas-Arya cluster, and Lalita Sunar and Gitakumari Chudhary from Dalit and Tharu cluster, respectively, have been elected under the PR system from NC.
Similarly, Maoist Center won three seats under thee PR system. The party has sent Gitadevi Mal and Janakidevi Kunwar from Khas-Arya and Laxmi BK from Dalit cluster.
Nagarik Unmukti Party won two seats under the PR system. It recommended Tika Thapa and Indira Giri from Khas-Arya cluster.
CPN (Unified Socialist) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) both won one seat under the PR system. Both have sent women candidates.
All the 32 province assembly members elected under the first past the post (FPTP) system are male. Though 12 female candidates had contested in 11 seats, none of them were victorious. Since the representation of women under the FPTP system in the province assembly was nil, parties had to recommend 18 women province assembly members under the PR system.
