Spain beat Belgium 2-1, book semifinal date with France

KATHMANDU: The 2020 champions Spain advanced into the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Belgium 2-1 in Los Angeles early Saturday morning.

Spain took the lead in the battle of two European sides in the 30th minute. However, Belgium equalized in the 41st minute. As the match appeared headed for the extra time, Spain scored the winner in the 88th minute to send Belgium packing.

Fabian Ruiz, who started for Spain at the expense of the regular starter Pedri, opened the scoring for Spain on a rebound after Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois had blocked Dani Olmo’s shot. After few minutes, Lamine Yamal fired a powerful shot into the near post from the edge of the box. However, his shot flew just wide of the post.

Belgium equalized soon after as Thomas Castagne controlled Kevin De Bruyne’s pass and floated ball inside the Spanish box which Charles De Ketelaere headed home.

This was the first goal conceded by Spain in six matches of the 2026 World Cup.

Belgium suffered a big setback as their dependable keeper was out injured in the 71st minute. Substitute keeper Senne Lamens failed to hold Pau Cubarsi attack in the dying minutes of the match which allowed substitute Mikel Merino to lash home the loose ball to send Spain to the semifinals.

Spain will now meet 2018 champions and 2022 finalists France in the final on July 15.
