Situation in Kailali prison under control: Police

KATHMANDU: A large number of police personnel have been deployed to bring the situation under control following a clash among inmates at the Kailali Prison in Dhangadhi.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rajkumar Singh, the spokesperson for the District Police Office, Kailali, the situation inside the prison is now under police control. “We have deployed 50 security personnel in the prison premises to maintain normalcy,” he said. “Since relatives of inmates have been coming to visit after the incident, we are managing those meetings accordingly.”

A meeting chaired by Chief District Officer (CDO) Gogan Bahadur Hamal on Saturday formed an investigation committee led by Assistant CDO Kiran Joshi to look into the incident.

Bharat Chaudhary, an inmate from Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City–4 who was injured in Friday night’s clash, died on Saturday during treatment. Forty-four other injured inmates are undergoing treatment at a hospital near Seti Provincial Hospital, which was built during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The clash broke out between inmates housed in Block “A” and those in Block “B” of the prison.

The same groups had engaged in a fight on Thursday night also. But the situation was brought under control after the CDO and the Superintendent of Police visited the prison and mediated between the parties.

Prison staff member Ram Prasad Chaudhary said that another round of stone-pelting and fighting broke out again on Friday night. A similar incident had occurred last month also.

Authorities say disagreements over the transfer of inmates have been the main cause of recurring disputes and clashes in the prison.

The Kailali Prison, which has a capacity of 150 inmates, is currently holding 680 prisoners.
