Sankata lifts Aha-Rara Gold Cup title

KATHMANDU: Sankata Club of Kathmandu won the title of the 22nd Aha Rara Gold Cup by defeating Bhutanese Youth Sporting Club (BYSC) 3-2 in the final at Pokhara Stadium on Saturday.

This marks Sankata’s second title in three years. Captain Sunil Bal scored the winning goal for the ‘A’ Division side in the 117th minute of extra time.

The match went into extra time after Sankata failed to maintain its 2-0 lead in the regulation 90 minutes. Sankata took the lead in the 8th minute when Suraj Thakuri scored from a rebound after BYSC goalkeeper Puja Thapa had punched Nishan Khadka’s strike.

Sankata doubled its lead in the 35th minute when Cameroonian player Messouke Oloumou scored past BYSC goalie.

BYSC made a comeback, however, leveling the score with two quick goals in the first half. Rene Santillan scored both goals for the US-based side.

However, BYSC’s hopes of winning the trophy were dashed when Sankata captain Bal scored in the extra time.

Sankata received a trophy and a cash prize of Rs 1.2 million, while BYSC took home a cheque for Rs 600,000.
