Public transport fares go up by 5%

KATHMANDU: The government has increased fares for inter-provincial public transport, both passenger and freight vehicles, by 5%.

The revised rates come into effect from Wednesday itself.

According to the Department of Transport Management (DoTM), the adjustment was made automatically under the scientific fare adjustment system following a significant rise in fuel prices.

When the government made an upward revision in public transport fares on April 8, 2026, diesel was priced at Rs 180.83 per litre. It has now increased to Rs 235.83 per liter—a 30.41% growth.

“The rise in operating costs for passenger buses and freight trucks operating in both hilly and Tarai regions due to a surge in fuel prices necessitated the hike in public transport fares,” the DoTM said.

The 5% fare increase will apply to all public vehicles, except electric vehicles (EVs), operating on national routes that connect two or more provinces.
