Prohibitory order imposed again in Kapilvastu

KATHMANDU: The District Administration Office, Kapilvastu, reimposed prohibitory orders on Sunday after a dispute between two groups in Bargadawa of Maharajganj Municipality escalated and spread to various parts of the district.

The local administration had also issued a prohibitory order on Saturday afternoon to contain the dispute.

Chief District Officer Janardan Gautam issued the order after tensions spread to Taulihawa, Pakadi, Lavani, and Dangari, among other areas, on Sunday.

The prohibitory order will apply to areas up to Lavani to the east, Bargadighat bridge to the west, Pachahera Chowk to the north, and the Dharmabhakta Secondary School building to the south. According to the order, gatherings, meetings, rallies, and demonstrations are prohibited within the area.

The dispute reportedly began on Saturday morning when loud music was played from a nearby Kali temple while Muslim devotees were offering Eid prayers.

Markets in the district headquarters Taulihawa, as well as Bahadurganj, Pakadi, and Lavani, remained shut on Sunday. Public transport services in different parts of the district were also halted.

Annual examinations underway at schools in Kapilvastu Municipality have been postponed until further notice due to the incident. More than two dozen people were injured in the clashes.

Meanwhile, an all-party meeting convened to resolve the dispute made a six-point decision on Sunday. Among others, the meeting decided to urge everyone to uphold communal harmony. The meeting also decided to arrest those involved in the protests and request the government to provide treatment for the injured, act against those making provocative statements, and maintain law and order.
