KATHMANDU: Traffic along the Naubise-Muglin section of the Prithvi Highway has been completely disrupted after the road collapsed at Krishnabhir of Dhading due to erosion by the Trishuli River.
The road collapsed on Sunday morning after a fresh surge in the Trishuli River caused severe erosion along the roadside.
According to the Department of Roads, the river’s powerful current battered the embankment wall, causing the road section to sink.
Pictures and video clips shared on social media show the road has completely collapsed at Krishnabhir. It appears difficult, if not impossible, to repair and reopen the highway immediately.
The Naubise-Muglin section of the Prithvi Highway is one of Nepal’s busiest road corridors and a vital artery connecting Kathmandu with the rest of the country. Most of the daily supplies entering the capital are transported along this corridor. The 36-kilometer Muglin-Narayanghat road connects this stretch with the East-West Highway that spans the entire breadth of the country.
The highway in the Galchhi area was obstructed after floods on the Trishuli River on August 26. Although security personnel cleared debris and brought the highway into operation by Friday evening, it has been disrupted again.
