PR vote counting concludes

KATHMANDU: Vote counting under the proportional representation (PR) system of the House of Representatives election has been completed.

According to the Election Commission (EC) of Nepal, all ballots were counted by Wednesday afternoon.

As per the EC’s data, a total of 10,789,078 valid votes were cast under the PR system. This meant parties needed to secure at least 323,672 votes to be eligible for PR seats. Only political parties securing a minimum of 3% of total valid votes are eligible for PR seats.

Among them, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) received the highest number of votes—5,158,810, or 47.81% of the total valid votes.

Similarly, the Nepali Congress (NC) came second with 1,756,043 votes, or 16.28%, of the total counted votes. CPN-UML, which had received the highest PR votes in 2022, obtained 1,452,939 votes, equivalent to 13.47% of the total votes. Similarly, the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) came fourth with 809,641 votes. This accounted for 7.5% of total valid votes.

The House of Representatives consists of 275 members – 165 elected under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system and 110 elected through the PR system.

Among the parties that crossed the threshold under the PR, the Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP) received 385,748 votes, or 3.58% of total valid votes, while the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) obtained 3.06% of the total valid votes, or 330,281 votes.
