KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a defendant in a human trafficking case who had been absconding for the past 32 years.
The Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police arrested Bir Bahadur Tamang (57) of Netrawati Dabjong Rural Municipality-2 in Dhading from Tikhedewal in Lalitpur-14 on Wednesday.
According to police, Tamang tricked a woman into traveling with him to Bagdogra in India in 1991 promising to take her to Brunei where her husband was working. A preliminary investigation conducted by the bureau revealed that Tamang had sold the woman for 10,000 Indian rupees.
The woman managed to escape when Indian nationals were taking her in a rickshaw. She contacted Indian security personnel who handed her over to Nepal Police at the Kakarbhitta border.
Police have obtained a three-day remand for Tamang from the Kathmandu District Court for further investigation.
