KATHMANDU: Police have arrested an individual on human trafficking charges.

Murtuza Miyan (47) of Pratappur-4, Nawalparasi West, was arrested for allegedly luring a Nepali woman to Sri Lanka with promises of employment opportunities as a domestic helper in Kuwait, according to DSP Gyanendra Prasad Phuyal, the spokesperson for the Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau of the Nepal Police.

Miyan first took the woman to New Delhi, India, via the Belhaiya border of Rupandehi and sent her to Sri Lanka with the help of an agent.

“Our investigation showed that the traffickers confiscated her passport and held her hostage for 68 days. They subjected her to mental torture and physical abuse,” Phuyal said.

The Kathmandu District Court granted permission on Thursday for the police to detain Miyan for seven days for further investigation, according to the bureau.
