POKHARA: Bibek Shrestha, a prominent figure in the folk-pop scene from three decades ago, is preparing to revive his old legacy after spending some time abroad. His band “Kandara” recently held big concerts in Kathmandu and the UK, attracting a large number of audiences. The band is now touring internationally with the slogan “First from home, then abroad”.
Marking the 32nd year of his musical journey, Shrestha has declared 2024/2025 as a celebratory year, with plans to perform in Dubai, Qatar and Hong Kong in June. Known for hits like “Tagaroma Rumal” and “Lekaki Hey Maya,” Shrestha’s band has successfully bridged generations through its fusion of folk and pop music.
The 1990s saw the rise of Pokhara-based bands that dominated the Nepali music scene. Another notable band, D-Morcha, blends Nepali folk, funk, rock, and blues, creating a unique musical flavor. Bhaskardhwaj Shrestha, with songs like “Khaila Baila Ho”, “Jhyamma-Jhyamma”, “Tara Khasyauli” and “Hunde Re”, continues to resonate with a distinctive style. Bands like Lekali, Madhyanha, Bro-Sis, Deurali and Vagabond rose to prominence in this era. Amrit Gurung of Nepathya is organizing a series of concerts across the world.
However, the once-thriving band culture in Pokhara has waned, with many members migrating abroad, leading to a slowdown in band activities. To revive this legacy, the Pokhara Musical Artists Association, in collaboration with Gandaki Academy, is organizing a “Back to Nineties” event in Pokhara on February 8. The event features seven bands of the 90s on one stage.
The event aims to rejuvenate the dormant musical bands and inspire the new generation to pursue music. The concert, scheduled from 5 to 9 PM at the Exhibition Center in Naya Bazaar, will feature performances by Kandara, D-Morcha Band, Lekali, Deurali, Bro-Sis, Madhyanha and Vagabond Band.
